01/23/2013 Cyclocross Race Nets $7k For Special Olympics This past October's Hyattsville CX, a cyclocross race held at Magruder Park, raised $3,000 for the Prince George's County Special Olympics program. At last night's Hyattsville City Council meeting, race organizers presented an oversized check to county Special Olympics athletes and officials. The $3,000 haul is significantly lower than the $7,000 raised during the previous Hyattsville CX in 2011. Eric Griffin, President of the Route 1 Velo cycling club and race director, said revenue was down this year because because of an increase in overhead costs and lower attendance (likely caused by the first rainy Hyattsville CX in the event's history) hurting concession sales. "The racers had great time and loved the conditions, but there weren't as many spectators spending as much time there," said Griffin in a brief interview. "All three years we've had 70 degrees and sunny weather, and this year it was 50 degrees and rainy." Later in the meeting, the Hyattsville City Council unanimously passed a measure approving a request to use the park for the next edition of the cyclocross race on Oct. 6, 2013. "The Hyattsville CX has become an incredibly successful event for the city of Hyattsville," said Abby Sandel, director of the Hyattsville Department of Community Services, during last night's meeting. "Very few communities can say that they have an event at this level in the city's largest park. It is a credit to the city that it happens here." The Hyattsville CX was started in 2008 and is part of the Super 8 race series. 08/08/2012 Route 1 Velo And Arrow Bicycle Take Part In National Night Out Against Crime Route 1 Velo club members, along with Arrow Bicycle and area law enforcement agencies, once again took part in Hyattsville's National Night Out Against Crime in Magruder Park. The club gave away 75 helmets to area kids as well as performed bike safety checks, and held a "bike rodeo" to promote bike safety. 02/07/2012 Cyclocross Race Nets $7k For Special Olympics During the February 6th Hyattsville City Council meeting, MABRA cycling club Route 1 Velo and Hyattsville bicycle shop Arrow Bicycle presented a $7,000 check to the Prince George's County Special Olympics. The money was raised at the 2011 Hyattsville CX, a cyclocross race which took place in Magruder Park on October 9, 2011. http://hyattsville.patch.com/articles/cyclocross-race-nets-7k-for-special-olympics Route 1 Velo is very proud of this accomplishment, and appreciate all the support from the area racers and fans that came out. The club is real proud of how the city has embraced the event and that the MABRA community can support such a great cause. |
